The ABCs of Behavioral Change

Change in behavior
Many medical and psychological problems can be helped through something as simple as behavioral change. Instead of focusing on labels, diagnoses, or "problems," behavioral approaches empower the individual to achieve "peak performance," voluntary control over certain mind and body processes. Biofeedback is a training, not a treatment. Learn skills through information, practice, and repetition. The new behaviors become "habit" --- a healthy habit!
Biofeedback does not "work" very well --- is not very effective --- without the dynamic interaction of the biofeedback therapist and the client/patient. The healthcare clinicians who simply connect some sensors to their patients, tell them to "figure it out," and then abandon the patients for several minutes are doing a great disservice to the biofeedback field, not to mention the lack of respect for the patient.
Biofeedback "works very well" when the patient begins the process by having the positive expectation that he or she can actually change behavior, whether that behavior is voluntarily decreasing muscle tension, increasing skin surface temperature, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, accessing the mechanisms in the brain to alter brain wave activity, learn "yoga breathing," or any number of many other behaviors. The biofeedback process continues with the "watchful eye" of the biofeedback therapist who teaches, encourages, illuminates, and coaches the patient to achieve a level of voluntary control and autonomy not previously demonstrated.
